The Gr.1 Mackinnon Stakes has been moved to the closing day of the spring carnival at Flemington.
Victoria Racing Club chief executive Simon Love said the 2000 metres race had lost its appeal as a key Melbourne Cup lead-up, prompting the switch and a prize money boost to $A2 million.
The Mackinnon Stakes will be renamed the Emirates Stakes while the original Emirates (1600m) will be the $A1 million Longines Mile on the opening day of the four-day carnival.
