The Mackinnon Stakes is to be moved from the first day of the Melbourne Cup carnival to the last, swapping its position with the Emirates Stakes.
Victoria Racing Club chief executive Simon Love said the Mackinnon (2000m) had lost its appeal as a key Melbourne Cup lead-up, prompting the change and a prize money boost to $2 million.
The Mackinnon Stakes will be renamed the Emirates Stakes while the original Emirates (1600m) will be the $1 million Longines Mile on the opening day of the four-day meeting.
