Vicki Prendergast hasn't had to wait long for her first crack at a black type feature.
The Matamata horsewoman is in her first season of training and her fourth starter will be the promising filly Hello M'Lady in the Listed Graeme Thomson Jewellers Great Northern Foal Stakes at Ellerslie on Saturday.
"I did have three horses in work, but I've turned one out and sold one on Tuesday," Prendergast said.
"My husband and I run a small agistment block. We spell racehorses and do yearling preparations and foal a few mares down.
"I have an eventing and show jumping background and I've still got a few show jumpers."
Hello M'Lady has made an encouraging start to her career with a debut fourth at Rotorua behind the subsequent stakes winner Ugo Foscolo and she then got home strongly to beat all but Jon Snow at New Plymouth.
Both starts were over 1200 metres and the filly is expected to enjoy the extra 200 metres on Saturday on a rain-affected track.
"She loves wet ground and she wants a bit more distance," Prendergast said. "I keep wanting to turn her out, but she keeps giving me excuses not to."
However, Hello M'Lady will be given a break – win, lose or draw - after Saturday with a view to next season's early three-year-old events.
"She will have three weeks in the paddock and after that we'll begin to build-up for some of the bigger races in the spring," Prendergast said.
"We'll probably only get three races out of her before the tracks get too firm. I will be looking after her – I think she's got a bright future over more ground." – NZ Racing Desk.
