Bao Shan Magic's stylish debut victory didn't come as any surprise to his trainer Nigel Tiley.

The Hong Kong-owned gelding ran right up to expectations with his first-up success on his home track at Pukekohe Park earlier this month.

"We've got a fair bit of time for him - he's a smart horse who's only going to get better," Tiley said.

"He'll most likely run next in a 1600 metre three-year-old race at Ellerslie on June 4, but he's not really a wet tracker so it will depend on the weather a bit."

Meanwhile, Bao Shan Magic's stablemates and fellow three-year-olds The Justice League and Brighton are both in the spelling paddock.

"I was going to take The Justice League to Awapuni for the Manawatu Classic, but he pulled a shoe and bruised the sole of his foot," Tiley said.

"As it turned out it was a heavy track so he wouldn't have run anyway and we made the call to turn him out. There wasn't much else around for him and he'll stay in the paddock until next month."

Despite a series of setbacks during his three-year-old campaign, The Justice League was the dual black type winner of the Gr.2 Wellington Guineas and the Listed Northland Breeders' Stakes.

The winner of the Listed Champagne Stakes last season, Brighton also made his mark in good company this term with a fourth placing in the Gr.1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas and finished runner-up in the Gr.2 Avondale Guineas.

"He was spelled straight after the Derby and he'll come back on June 1," Tiley said.
