Have horse, will travel if there's rain – that's where Greg Lambert is at with his capable jumper Superturf.
The Awapuni horseman will give the nine-year-old a run on the flat in the El Cheapo Cars Handicap at Otaki on Thursday, but is desperate for rain before he can get serious with the gelding over fences.
"I'm really pleased with him and he looks good," Lambert said. "He'll probably go to the jumping trials on Sunday at Levin – he's virtually ready to go and I'd consider the Waikato Hurdles if it poured down next week."
The winner of 10 races on the flat including a Gr.3 Winter Cup, Superturf won the Awapuni Hurdles last winter and finished fourth in the Great Northern Hurdles.
"He'll have a couple of hurdle races this time, but if he's struggling then he'll probably switch to steeplechasing," Lambert said.
"He tends to get a long way out of his ground and the hurdle races are too short for him, but he does want rain and that's what we're waiting for at the moment."
Lambert is also hopeful of improvement from Superturf's stablemate She's Slinky at New Plymouth on Saturday.
She was unplaced when resuming last month in the Listed NZB Finance Sprint, a race she finished runner-up in last year.
"She missed a start at Wellington that would have been ideal for her so she was a little bit under done," Lambert said.
She's Slinky gets her chance to show improvement when she drops back in grade to contest the Rating 85 Mason Appliances Haier 1200. – NZ Racing Desk.
