Stallion value with a capital V

Breeders looking for Group One options at ultra-competitive prices won't be disappointed by Wellfield Lodge's service fees for 2016.

The Palmerston North stud has reduced Alamosa's fee to $8500 + GST with a free return while Road To Rock will stand at $4500 + GST with a free return.

"Whether it's to breed to sell or to race, our two stallions offer outstanding value for money," Wellfield's Bill Gleeson said.

"Both of them have proved they can leave Group One horses and they are succeeding in all our major markets. The statistics show how well they are both performing."

The winner of four Group One events as a two, three and four-year-old, Alamosa has left 88 individual winners at an impressive winning strike rate of 54.3 percent to starters.

His progeny includes the Gr 1 VRC Oaks winner Kirramosa and New Zealand's current leading lady Stolen Dance, winner of the Gr 2 Cal Isuzu Stakes and the Gr 3 Eagle Technology and four times placed at the highest level.

"He's got the top mare in the country and Alamosa has got his best crop on the ground now so the future looks very good," Gleeson said.

The son of O'Reilly has also been represented by the stakes winners Strada Cavallo, Goodman, Alamer and Wafer and he is currently New Zealand's fourth leading sire of black type winners this season.

Retired after Group One success in the George Main Stakes and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Road To Rock is the best performed son of Encosta de Lago at stud and his stallion career is going exactly to expectations.

"We always knew his progeny would get better with time and develop into strong classic and cups contenders," Gleeson said.

Road To Rock has left 27 individual winners, including nine from just 13 Australian starters and three winners from four Singapore runners.

His top performer is the outstanding Montaigne, who in his first preparation went from a debut second in January to a courageous fourth in the Gr 1 The BMW in March.

In between times, he won races at Warwick Farm and Randwick and ran second to the VRC Derby winner Tarzino in the 2000 metre Gr 1 Rosehill Guineas after a solid third in the Gr 2 Hobartville Stakes.

Montaigne was subsequently sold to clients of John Moore's champion Sha Tin stable.
