Apprentice jockey Rory Hutchings celebrated his first stakes success for his master Chris Waller at Hawkesbury on Saturday when riding Amovatio to victory in the Gr.3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup.

Hutchings has struggled with his weight since relocating to Sydney from New Zealand and can only ride at a minimum of 56 kilos.

"I'm on a strict diet to constantly maintain my weight," Hutchings said.

"I go into Chris's office every morning and hop on the scales and he has a look to make sure where I'm at and see what comfortable weight I can ride at that week and how I am going health wise.

"It's definitely a big help to have Chris there looking over my shoulder."

Hutchings is due to make the transition to senior rider shortly, with his apprenticeship coming to an end at the beginning of June.

"Chris said that he will always stick by me and be loyal to me even after I finish my apprenticeship," Hutchings said.
