Cambridge jockey Rogan Norvall has undergone an operation in Waikato Hospital after his left leg was badly damaged in a barrier incident at the Te Aroha meeting on Wednesday.
Norvall had his leg crushed against the back of the barriers when his mount, Livingston, suddenly backed out of his stall when being loaded for the eighth event, the NZB Pearl Series 1600.
Norvall suffered fractures of the tibia and fibia bones, one being a spiral fracture and the other a compound fracture, and he also has a break higher up the leg. He underwent surgery this morning to have a rod inserted into the injured leg.
"He's a bit groggy but he seems to have come through the operation well," said Mark Du Plessis when visiting his friend soon after the surgery.
Du Plessis was also riding in Livingston's race and was in the adjacent stall when Norvall was injured and was sickened by the sight of the twisted leg.
Cambridge trainer Linda Laing, a close friend and Norvall's biggest supporter, visited the injured jockey in Waikato Hospital last night and says he was in good spirits, despite the major injury.
"After it happened he sent me a text to say he probably wouldn't be at work in the morning," said Laing.
"It's the same leg he injured about four years ago."
Norvall has enjoyed a bit of success with Laing of late, notching wins on Neala and Memories Only in recent weeks.
Norvall was the second jockey to be injured before the start of the eighth event. Alysha Collett was thrown from her mount, Spawn Of Elaia, in the birdcage.
"He reared up and went over and I knocked my head," said Collett, sporting a couple of cuts above her right eye.
Spawn Of Elaia was withdrawn and Collett was stood down from her remaining ride at Te Aroha, but less than 24 hours later she was back riding at Woodville.
"There's a bit of swelling and some bruising, but I'm all right," said Collett, who is looking forward to riding Blizzard in the Manco Easter Stakes on Saturday.
Collett won fresh-up on Blizzard at Tauranga last Saturday and rates him a chance to get some of the money.
"I think he can be in the first five," she said. – NZ Racing Desk
