Kiwi jockey Andrew Calder was in the Group One spotlight at Macau last weekend. Calder produced a fine front-running display on ex-New Zealand galloper Best Of Luck in the Macau – Hong Kong Trophy (1500m) and was praised for the part he played in the win of the former Gai Waterhouse galloper Torquoise Power in the Macau Derby.

A son of Thorn Park and Marasie, Best Of Luck was bred by Waitaria Holdings Ltd and was a winner and four times placed when racing in New Zealand as Zabbadak from the Riccarton stable of Shane Kennedy and Anna Furlong.

Since relocating to Macau Best Of Luck has won four and been placed eight times from 12 starts. "He's a push button type of horse, always jumps well and he is so genuine," said Calder.

Though Calder had to make way for Joao Moreira on Torquoise Power, trainer Geoff Allendorf praised him.

"I owe a big thank you to Andrew Calder for all the work he's done on the horse," said Allendorf.

"I didn't have a lot of time to get him ready and he won nicely first-up with Andrew on him over 1500 metres and then it was straight into the Derby."
