Sweynesse winning the Gr.3 Gloaming Stakes
A Cambridge farm's search for a stallion to meet their strict criteria has come to a successful conclusion with the signing of a son of the champion galloper and sire Lonhro.
Novara Park Stud manager Ray Knight said they had been on the look-out for an Australian Group One performed horse and Sweynesse had satisfied all their expectations on pedigree, performance and type.
"Sweynesse is the highest-rated stallion from the Zabeel sire line to begin stud duties in New Zealand since Savabeel. On the racetrack, Sweynesse was one of the top three-year-old colts of his year earning him an interim Timeform Rating of 122."
A winner of his only start at two, the John O'Shea-trained Sweynesse was unbeaten in his first four starts including dual Group Three wins in the Spring Stakes and the Gloaming Stakes.
He then stepped up to Group One company for the first time when third in the Spring Champion Stakes and he ended his preparation when eighth in the Gr.1 Cox Plate, a placing that didn't accurately reflect his performance.
From a wide gate he settled last and rattled off the fastest final sectional to finish only 1.75 lengths from the winner Adelaide.
Sweynesse kicked off his autumn programme with a close second in the Gr.2 Hobartville Stakes and he pushed Hallowed Crown close again when runner-up in the Gr.1 Randwick Guineas.
"He was awesome. We got back in a slowly run race so his (sectional) splits would have been amazing," rider James McDonald said.
Sweynesse is out of the Singspiel mare Swansea, a multiple winner, from the family of American Group One winners Fantastic Look and Designed For Luck.
"Sweynesse was a legitimate Group One performer and he has the looks and pedigree to complete a quality package," Knight said. "He is a magnificent individual and stands 16.2h. He is dark brown, very correct and will let down into an impressive stallion. He will be a very valuable addition to the New Zealand ranks."
To stand alongside Jakkalberry, Sweynesse is being syndicated among New Zealand breeders and will be offered at a fee of $6000 + GST. He will be introduced at an open day on April 24 at 11.30am. – NZ Racing Desk.
