Spring classic success is already top of the priority list for Ugo Foscolo, who has credited his sire Zacinto with the first winner of his career.

Despite pre-race concerns about a heavily rain-affected track at Rotorua, the exciting youngster showed his raw talent to post a runaway debut victory in the Rydges Hotel 2YO on Wednesday.

"He didn't look comfortable at all, but class takes them a fair way and he has showed us a lot at home," trainer Stephen Marsh said.

"He could have one more run – there's a race (the Listed Hamilton Vet Services Juvenile) at Te Rapa in early May that No More Tears won last year and he could go there and then spell.

"We'll see how he does after this first though. He's a very good horse and he will be much better as a three-year-old – his main aim will be the 2000 Guineas."

Unbeaten in three trial appearances, Ugo Foscolo was in front before the turn at Rotorua and was untested to score by a wide margin.

"He would have won by the length of the straight on a better track," successful rider Danielle Johnson said.

"There's a lot of upside to him, he's a class horse of the future and it's good to get a win in Lib's colours."

Ugo Foscolo is part-owned by Wellingtonian Lib Petagna, who also races last Saturday's Sydney Group One-winning pair of Lucia Valentina and Sofia Rosa.

A $50,000 Karaka purchase by Petagna's racing manager Bruce Perry, Ugo Foscolo was offered by Inglewood Stud, home to his sire Zacinto who is a Group Two-winning son of Dansili. – NZ Racing Desk.
