Jockey shortage may force 3YO south

A lack of suitable riders may result in the runaway debut winner Sydney's Shot heading to the central districts to make his next appearance.

Cambridge trainer Stephen Marsh would ideally like to run the three-year-old closer to home this Saturday, but fears that may not be possible.

"The three-year-old event over 1200 metres at Tauranga would be a really suitable race for him, but there might not be enough riders there," he said.

"When we have three meetings on a Saturday there's a real problem trying to get jockeys – in my opinion one of the meetings should be on a Sunday."

With both the Hastings and Riccarton fixtures boasting black type events, riding options at Tauranga will be limited.

"We'll probably end up going to Hawke's Bay for a Rating 65 over 1200 metres," Marsh said.

Sydney's Shot had won a trial before stepping out recently at Rotorua where the Magic Albert gelding was slow away before he looped the field and waltzed clear.

"He's a smart horse and I thought he'd win, but I didn't think he'd win by six lengths," Marsh said.

"He's had a wind operation so we have to keep an eye on that. We'll keep him fresh and restrict him to sprinting distances at this stage – it looks like we're going to have a bit of fun with him."

Sydney's Shot is a half-brother to the multiple Australian Group placegetter Dubai To Sydney with their dam a half-sister to the Group One winner and successful sire Charge Forward. – NZ Racing Desk.
