Who Dat Singa (NZ) (Iffraaj) won the Listed Melvista Stakes over 2200 metres at Ascot in Perth on Saturday, notching his first stakes win for trainer Alan Mathews.
The well-backed three-year-old sustained a long run, set alight from the 800 metre mark by rider Patrick Carbery, to comfortably hold VRC Derby placegetter Kia Ora Koutou (Blackfriars).
Who Dat Singa relished the step up in distance and will be one of the leading fancies for the Gr.2 West Australian Derby, over 2400 metres, in a fortnight.
Mathews and owner Lou Erceg bred Who Dat Singa in New Zealand and he has now won five of his ten starts, with a further three placings.
Out of the unraced Danasinga mare Singadablues, Who Dat Singa is from the family of New Zealand Derby winner Great Command (NZ) (Marscay).
Trainer Alan Mathews is bullish about Who Dat Singa's prospects over the 2400m of the derby.
"At the end of the day they can stay or they can't stay and he's got rid of the critics today," Mathews said.
