Trainer Grant Williams and leviathan owner Bob Peters combined to win the $A250,000 Gr.3 West Australian Oaks (2400m) at Ascot yesterday with First Impressions (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle).
Patiently ridden by Glenn Smith, First Impressions turned the tables on her odds-on stablemate Arcadia Dream (Domesday) to prove far superior in the run to the post.
First Impressions bounced back from her seventh to Arcadia Dream in the Natasha Stakes (2200m) a fortnight ago.
Bob Peters said breeding indicated First Impressions had more potential as a stayer than Arcadia Dream.
"She's bred to get the distance," Peters said of the daughter of Rip Van Winkle, himself a Champion miler by the staying influence Galileo.
"Obviously there was a bit going on in front and that made it a bit hard for a couple of ones up there.
"We haven't given up on Arcadia Dream yet. She had a hard run."
Peters said First Impressions and Arcadia Dream will head to the $400,000 Gr.2 Schweppes WATC Derby (2400m) in two weeks if they pull up well.
The daughter of Group One Thorndon Mile runner-up Striker (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy), First Impressions in now an extremely valuable commodity.
Purchased by prominent West Australian bloodstock agent John Chalmers on behalf of Peters, First Impressions was a $270,000 graduate of the Haunui Farm draft at the 2014 Karaka Premier Yearling Sale.
