The last fortnight has been a memorable one for Ryan Simpson and Thursday's Wanganui fixture may bring him further success.
In his second season as a trainer, the Cambridge-based horseman has three wins to his credit with two of them and a second placing coming this month.
Late developer Masabio was successful first-up at Hawera where Miss Pareto finished a close second and two days later I'llav Bubbles returned on a winning note at Matamata.
"I've got four in work having just retired two others, but it keeps me busy doing them on my own," Simpson said.
"I ride a bit of work for Paul Mirabelli, who's next to me, and the odd one for Ben Ropiha as well.
"Hopefully, with a few more winners I'll be able to build the numbers up."
Simpson will head south to Wanganui with I'llav Bubbles, who will step out in the NZB Insurance Pearl Series Race.
"She showed a lot of promise last time in, but she was a bit weak," he said.
"She kept getting caught wide as well and Opie (Bosson) gave her a good ride at Matamata and she got the job done and she was only 85 percent fit.
"We'll target four races this time in and put her out for two or three weeks and then get her ready for the spring. I think she'll be a pretty good mare over ground."
The five-year-old Masabio, who has won once from three runs, was to also have ventured south but a stone bruise has kept him at home.
"He's taken a long time to work things out and he's still a work in progress, but he's going the right way now," said Simpson, who rode 47 winners as an apprentice and senior jockey.
He enjoyed a further two successes last season as an amateur rider, but he is now concentrating full-time on his training career. – NZ Racing Desk.
