Baker Delays Mongolian Khan Decision

Trainer Murray Baker will confer with Mongolian Khan's (Holy Roman Emperor) international owners before making his next move with the triple Group One winner in the wake of his Rosehill failure on Saturday in The BMW.

A spell seemed the obvious path Baker would take with Mongolian Khan when stewards questioned the Kiwi trainer about his race plans for the four-year-old after the dual Derby and Caulfield Cup winner finished ninth in the field of 10, more than 14 lengths from the winner Preferment (NZ) (Zabeel).

Mongolian Khan has performed well below expectations in his three starts since he returned to racing last month after recovering from the severe colic attack that ruled him out of the Melbourne Cup in November.

During Saturday's post race inquiry into Mongolian Khan's BMW performance Baker reported that he would now be spelled and would report on the future race plans for the entire.

However Baker said on Sunday that a final decision on the next step he takes with Mongolian Khan won't be made until he confers with owner Lang Lin, principal of the giant Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Group, and his associates.

Baker told The Informant on Sunday that Mongolian Khan's work and recovery rates during the week leading into the BMW had been "terrific" but nothing went right for him in the race.

"All the tests we've been running on him show he's in perfect health," Baker said.

"We'll monitor him over the next few days and go from there."

During Saturday's inquiry jockey Opie Bosson stated that in his opinion the horse had not come up even though he suffered an early check and was forced to cover ground. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

Mongolian Khan is nominated for the $2 million Sydney Cup at Randwick on April 9. -racingandsports.com.au
