Gust of Wind gone till spring

John Sargent's Gust of Wind (NZ) (Darci Brahma) will go to the spelling paddock, after she failed to fire a shot in three autumn runs.

The staying mare finished fourth in last year's Caulfield Cup, and produced an enormous effort to finish sixth in the Melbourne Cup last spring - but the daughter of Darci Brahma never got out to her more favoured trip this preparation.

Brenton Avdulla, who took the ride in the Group 3 Epona Stakes (1900m) on Saturday, reported her action was amiss, and the four-year-old pulled up with mild lameness in the off foreleg after finishing at the foot of the 11-horse field.

Sargent said Gust of Wind also pulled up "a bit distressed with a high heart rate" and will now enjoy a decent break from racing, aiming to get back for the spring carnival.

Gust of Wind beat Winx by 2.5 lengths in the Group 1 ATC Oaks, Chris Waller's mighty mare subsequently stringing together seven wins - five of which have been at Group 1 level.

Also out of the stewards' report from Golden Slipper Day were a couple of rare breaches by each of Tommy Berry and Opie Bosson respectively.

Berry rode 1kg overweight on English in The Galaxy (1100m), finishing 3.5 lengths back from Griante in the Group 1 sprint.

The cause of his weight indiscretion was that the heavier gear he used for mount Scarlet Rain in the Golden Slipper was also incorrectly used in his next race, with Berry forgetting to switch to the lighter gear.

Meanwhile, Bosson was fined $1000 for failing to ride out Mongolian Khan to the line in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m).

Mongolian Khan finished fifth, just 0.3 lengths off third-placegetter Criterion, and Bosson pleaded guilty to the charge. -racing.com
