Moody cleared of deliberate cobalt use

Leading Australian trainer Peter Moody has been found not guilty of deliberately administering illegal levels of the drug cobalt, but was found guilty of two lesser charges.

They followed the elevated reading returned by Lidari after he ran second in the Gr.1 Underwood Stakes in 2014.

Racing Appeals and Disciplinary chairman John Bowman said at Wednesday's hearing they were not comfortably satisfied that the horse was given cobalt for the purpose of affecting its performance.

He said the prohibited substance found its way into the horse's system through other stable processes, but the board said two lesser charges against Moody, relating to the non-intentional administration of cobalt to a racehorse, had been proved.

The arguments over penalties for those charges will be heard on Thursday.
