A comfortable victory on his first outing at Ellerslie has Awapuni trainer Royden Bergerson eyeing a tilt at the last Group One prize of the season with Saturday's comprehensive winner Postboy.

The six-year-old Postponed gelding took on a strong field of rating 85 rivals in the Crombie Lockwood sponsored contest and gave them all a beating as he surged clear to score by over a length in a slick 1.34.61 for the 1600 metre journey.

Bergerson was quick to pay credit to rider Opie Bosson who settled his charge expertly in the trail throughout before dashing clear halfway down the home straight for a clear-cut victory.

"It was a gun ride by Opie as he put him in the right spot and he always seemed to be travelling like a winner," he remarked.

"He was always on the bridle and looked the winner a long way out. I might just give him a brief freshen up now and then come back for the Easter as he would likely get in with a light weight."

Rider Opie Bosson was equally impressed by the performance of his mount.

"He travelled beautifully throughout and once I got the gap he gave me a really good kick," he reported.

"He's getting better and better all the time and he had no problems going this way around for the first time."

The Manco Easter is the last Group One race of the New Zealand racing season and will be run at Ellerslie on the 23rd of April. Bergerson may however have to reassess his charge's weight and chances of getting a start as the 2016 edition of the time honoured event will be run for the first time under set weights and penalties criteria as opposed to the traditional handicap conditions. – NZ Racing Desk
