Just The Tip has finished close to the action in his last two appearances and a drop in grade at Waverley on Saturday might be enough to see him at the head of affairs.

The free-going seven-year-old comes back from black type company to the Steelform Roofing Group Waverley Cup and as a past winner on the course he looks well-placed to bounce back to winning form.

A dual Listed winner of the Wanganui and Marton Cups, Just The Tip has more recently finished sixth in both the Gr.3 Trentham Stakes and Gr.3 Taranaki Cup, both times making the pace before being reeled in close to home.

"It's been quite heart-breaking really, he does all the dirty work and just misses out that last bit," trainer Janelle Millar said.

"He's been working really, really well and in his last couple of runs he hasn't been left alone in front."

Millar said Just The Tip was one dimensional and had to make the pace.

"Even in his track work he doesn't want to sit off other horses, he's not happy unless his head is in front. We've tried to ride him back, but he just doesn't like it."

With that in mind, Millar has resisted the temptation to engage a claiming apprentice, preferring to go with the experience of Hayden Tinsley.

"He's got the 60 kilos, but he needs a good, strong rider to get him out of the gates and judge the pace," Millar said. "And to be fair, this will hopefully be the first time he will strike a really good track, which is exactly what he wants." – NZ Racing Desk.
