A newly-formed Ashburton training partnership have high hopes of opening their account on Friday.
Ashley McKay has recently joined forces with her father Russell and they are expecting the former North Island mare Ashwini to go close to crediting them with their first winner in the NZB Insurance Pearl Series Race.
"We've changed a bit of gear on her and we'll take the ear covers off and put the hood on her," Ashley McKay said.
"She's working really well and she just needs to finish off her races a touch better. The hood should put that finishing edge on her and I can't really see why she can't win."
A multiple placegetter when previously prepared by Stephen Marsh at Cambridge, Ashwini has weighed in twice from four starts from her new quarters with apprentice Samantha Wynne to take over the reins on Friday from McKay.
"I've still got my licence and I will ride the odd one, but I want to focus on the training side of things," McKay said.
The stable will also be represented in the Win a Trip to the Melbourne Cup with RD1 Maiden by Flytime. He has led in each of his two starts before dropping out of contention.
"We've been trying to get him to settle so he can finish off his races," McKay said. "Hopefully he will take a sit, he's still learning and the penny will drop soon." – NZ Racing Desk.
