Mabeel's latest effort at Te Rapa augurs well for his next appearance when he steps back up to 1600 metres.
The five-year-old won the Listed Anniversary Handicap and ran fourth in the Gr.1 Thorndon Mile before he reverted to 1200 metres at Ellerslie where he was a fast-finishing fourth in the Gr.3 Darley Plate.
"He missed the kick a bit and got completely out of his ground, but he got home super and he was in front 50 metres passed the post," co-trainer Natalie Young said.
Mabeel will run next in the Gr.2 Japan/NZ International Trophy at Tauranga on March 26.
