Well-related juvenile Our Girl Madi hasn't been the easiest horse to handle, but she has showed she's got the talent to match her spirit.
"She's a tough filly and she took a while to be broken in," trainer Mike Breslin said.
The daughter of Smart Missile has since finished runner-up in an 800 metre trial at Foxton last month and will debut against a small field in the Nigel Smith Tractors Maiden at Otaki on Thursday.
"She's not what you'd call a natural two-year-old, but she went quite well at the trials and she's showed enough ability to give them a fright," Breslin said.
Raced by Wellington builder Laurie Wotton and his wife Jo, Our Girl Madi was purchased in Sydney but she has strong New Zealand ties.
She is out of the Zabeel mare Hansuyen, who is a sister to the dual Group One winners St Reims and Champagne.
Meanwhile, Breslin has welcomed Wafer, Heni and Leeds back to the stable following time off after their successful southern campaigns.
The lightly-raced Wafer won at Kumara and then bridged the gap to stakes class with her victory in the Listed Gore Guineas.
Heni collected wins at Riccarton (two) and Ashburton with cheques from all six of her spring campaign starts while Leeds enjoyed his time on the West Coast circuit earlier this year.
A Listed Castletown Stakes winner at two, Leeds picked up placings at Kumara and Greymouth either side of a win at Hokitika. – NZ Racing Desk.
