It's all go for Go Racing owners with six runners on Derby day on Saturday, including five runners in Group features, among them leading Gr.1 BMW New Zealand Derby hopeful What's The Story.
"It's extremely exciting. We've got horses going to the races on Saturday at the top of their game and have genuine chances of winning four Group races," said Go Racing manager Albert Bosma.
"If we can pull off one of them, we'd be stoked but we reckon we've got a chance of getting even more than that. That should make for a fun day for our 60 to 70 owners, 33 of whom will be on track."
As well as What's The Story showcasing the Go Racing colours in the Blue Riband New Zealand Derby (2400m), Go Racing owners will chase success in the Gr.3 Darley Plate (1200m) with Passing Shot, the Gr.3 Stella Artois Mr Tiz Trophy (1200m) through No More Tears and Ruud Not Too and the Gr.3 McKee Family Sunline Vase (2100m) with Poetic Affair.
The Stephen McKee and Eddie Chippendale-trained What's The Story produced a remarkable performance to overcome what seemed like a terminal check in winning at Ellerslie last start to secure a start in the Derby.
"It was an enormous run to get up and win," Bosma said.
"He copped interference which really affected him. It was a super run and a great Derby trial. He's a genuine winning chance this weekend.
"He's bred to win a Derby and he's been trained specifically to win a Derby. He'll be peaking on the day and he's hard-fit. We just want the track to come back as much as possible because he's a horse who really pings off good ground.
"It's just exciting going into the race with a horse who is a genuine chance."
Genuine winning chance is the phrase Bosma uses to describe the McKee-Chippendale-trained Passing Shot, who won the Mr Tiz Trophy on the same day last year and goes into the Darley Plate off the back of a last start open sprint win at New Plymouth.
"He's a very sharp horse and he's come through that last win well," he said. ''He's another horse that needs good ground. He's a fast horse and he bounces off hard tracks."
Bosma said there was little between the Stephen Marsh-trained pair of No More Tears and Ruud Not Too ahead of the Mr Tiz Trophy, though favoured No More Tears should the track remain closer to slow than good.
The McKee-Chippendale-trained maiden filly Poetic Affair tackles the Sunline Vase and is a better chance than her non-winner status suggests, according to Bosma.
"We know she's a maiden but she can stay and 2100m will suit her," Bosma said.
Other Go Racing runners at Ellerslie are What A Diva, who is on trial for a start in the NZ St Leger when she tackles the 2100m Rating 65 event, while Prince Mambo is likely to need the run in the Rating 85 1400m race, Bosma says. - NZ Racing Desk.
