Ritchie taking blinkered approach

A gear addition might be the trump card He's An Ace needs to return to winning ways at Ellerslie on Saturday.

The talented three-year-old was beaten for the first time at his most recent appearance, resulting in a new look for the gelding when he runs in the Gr.3 Stella Artois Mr Tiz Trophy.

"We're going to apply the blinkers and they will sharpen him up that bit more," trainer Shaune Ritchie said. "He was over-thinking things a bit at his last start."

He's An Ace won his first two starts at Ellerslie, accounting for his stakes-performed stablemate Way In in December after beating the highly-regarded His Majesty on debut.

The Swiss Ace gelding lost his perfect record last month when he finished third in a special conditions event.

"He's freshened up really nicely," Ritchie said. "A dead track would suit him, he likes a bit of give in the ground and that would make him super competitive."

Any softening of the track will also be relished by stablemate Megawatt, who runs in the Gr.3 McKee Family Sunline Vase and remains in contention for the Gr.1 Wellfield New Zealand Oaks.

"She was stakes placed the last time she went to Ellerslie (in the Royal Stakes)," Ritchie said.

"She is one-paced and a genuine stayer. Rain will make all the difference to her being competitive, but I need to run her either way so she's ready if they happen to get a wet track at Trentham for the Oaks." – NZ Racing Desk.
