Humidor's connections aren't about to let a chance go by with a crack at the Gr.1 BMW New Zealand Derby too good an opportunity to pass up.
He has impressed in a brief career and there is stable confidence in the stoutly-bred three-year-old.
"You only get one chance to run in a Derby in New Zealand," said Johno Benner, who prepares Humidor with his partner Holly Wynyard.
"He's very well and while it may have come up a bit quickly for him, and horses like Rangipo are more seasoned, they'll know he's in the race."
By Galileo's Group One-winning son Teofilo out of a Zabeel mare, Humidor won his maiden over a mile at Wanganui in January and in one subsequent start he finished runner-up at Te Rapa.
He was beaten that day by The Hassler, who was in receipt of a kilo, and he has since finished a tidy fifth in the Gr.2 Avondale Guineas.
"If our horse had run straight he would have won that race easily," Benner said. "He's got a lot of upside. It is probably the first time he's had to come away from the rail and he just got a bit lost out there.
"He has been inclined to do a few things wrong, so we've just got to try and straighten that out and he'll win a lot of races."
Humidor will be ridden by Mark Du Plessis, who rode stablemate Vespa to Group One success at Ellerslie in the Diamond Stakes.
"We've had a good association with Mark and we're very happy to have him on," Benner said.
"I know my horse can run the 2400 metres and any rain about wouldn't worry him either." – NZ Racing Desk.
