MONTAIGNE A GENUINE GROUP ONE CONTENDER

Montaigne
Anthony Cummings says he is looking forward to testing exciting three-year-old Montaigne (NZ) (Road to Rock) at the elite level after his eye-catching third behind star colt Press Statement in last Saturday's Gr2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill.

Despite drifting well back and being blocked for multiple runs in the straight, Motaigne was able to weave between runners and flash home for third behind the horse most consider to be the best 3YO in Australia.

Cummings will now step Montaigne up to Gr1 company in Saturday week's Randwick Guineas over a mile but is expecting the promising gelding to really come into his own when he runs over 2000 metres in the Rosehill Guineas on 19 March.

"Whatever doubt there was about him being up to that grade disappeared," Cummings said.

"He still has a few things to work out. His barrier manners need to improve a bit. He was a bit slow into gear and that really cost him in that race, but his effort was very good."

"I think the 2000 metres of the Rosehill Guineas is really going to suit him. Then after that we will have a decision to make...whether we pull up stumps or go to the Derby or to the Doncaster."
