Cambridge trainer Shelley Hale admits she may have to lift her sights with promising intermediate galloper Go Nicholas after he scored a comprehensive victory at Ellerslie on Saturday.
The strapping four-year-old Danroad gelding made it two wins from just four starts when he cruised clear of his eight rivals in the Retina Specialists sponsored 1200 metre contest in a manner which suggests he won't be found wanting in better company.
Hale was pleased to see her charge race in a handy position throughout after costing himself at his previous start with a tardy beginning.
"I said to Opie (Bosson) to keep digging him as in his trials he just flew the gates but at the races he's just fallen out," she explained.
"He's made it hard on himself with those slow beginnings but he's remembered how to do it today which has made the job a whole lot easier."
Hale was also delighted with the improvement in the gelding's racing manners after some erratic behavior in his first few starts.
"He's taken awhile as he's been a bit of a dufus around other horses as he doesn't like the rail much, but he's learning as he goes," she said.
"We're definitely coming back for Cup Week. We will wait and see how many points he gets for this win and decide on a race for him but he will be there."- NZ Racing Desk
