Health issues may prevent Flavigny from realising her full potential, but they didn't stop her from accomplishing a satisfying mission at Tauherenikau.
The Mike Moroney and Chad Ormsby-trained four-year-old boosted her future value with victory in Monday's Listed WRC/Pope & Gray Contractors Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes.
"She's been working out of her skin and she's always showed a lot of ability, but she's had two wind operations," Ballymore Stables' racing manager Nick Fairweather said.
"She has been relaxing a lot better and she has matured both physically and mentally."
Raced by her co-breeders Windsor Park Stud, Flavigny had finished fourth last time out in the Gr.3 Anniversary Handicap at Trentham where she did well to finish as close as she did after racing three wide without cover.
"Our main job was to get black type with her so it's a great result for the Schick family," Fairweather said.
"She's been up for a while now so Mike and Chad may give her a break – we'll assess that when she gets home."
Flavigny settled midfield on the outer and came with long strides down the outside of the track to win going away from Rohaise and Mae West.
"If she had a better breathing pattern, she would be a Group One horse," successful rider Mark Du Plessis said.
Savaria, Somethingvain, Thee Auld Floozie, Eternity and Moccona Mist were all declared late scratchings after opening issues with their gates at the start.
Meanwhile, Nymph Monte booked himself an appearance at the Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup carnival with his defeat of the favourite Postboy in the WCM Legal Wairarapa Cup.
"It was a perfect ride by Danielle (Johnson) and he dropped the bit at the back and found the line easily," part-owner and trainer Grant Nicholson said.
"There's some good money on offer at Ellerslie so we'll go back up there."
