Delay no drama for Kiwi Karma

Kiwi Karma (Manoel Nunes) has Dubai in her sights after she makes short work of her rivals on Friday.
Kiwi Karma (Manoel Nunes) has Dubai in her sights after she makes short work of her rivals on Friday.

A 40 minute-delay failed to rattle smart mare Kiwi Karma (NZ) (Fast 'N' Famous) who, once the $125,000 Kranji Stakes A race over 1200m was underway, shot straight like a die to lead from pillar to post on Friday night.

A technical glitch to the betting system caused the start to be held up, requiring jockeys to dismount around at the start.

Leading throughout, Kiwi Karma ($9) raised another gear in the home straight to defeat Wimbledon and Raise No Doubt by a length.

With trainer Michael Clements in Sydney, his right-hand man Michael White was the one who had to sit through a few anxious moments during the pre-race hold-up.

"It's a huge relief she's still gone through it like nothing happened," said White.

"It's true that we were all in the same boat, but it still is a worry how she will cop it. I kept an eye on her throughout the delay and she did not turn a hair and was relaxed throughout.

"Last prep, she was a worry as she was more highly-strung but she's a lot more chilled now.

"What can I say, she's a real racehorse, she never idled, and everything she does is just so professional.

"Dubai is still on the cards and I guess it's one step closer after tonight. The plan is to next race her in the Merlion Trophy, but we'll have to see how she gets out of tonight's ordeal."

Kiwi Karma has been entered for both the Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint (1000m) on turf and the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen (1200m) at Meydan on March 26. She will now be aimed at the Group 2 Merlion Trophy (1200m) on March 6 as one last local prep race while hoping for an invitation from the Dubai Racing Club to drop in the mailbox.

Nunes, who has now partnered the Fast 'N' Famous four-year-old at all her eight wins for the Dsands Racing Stable, said he was even more confident of that latest success than at her last.

"She had 57kgs on her back and don't forget she's not big, but I was more confident about her winning tonight as she was really fit. She came on so much more after her last win," said the Brazilian jockey who was at the double, a more than welcome haul that will help make hay while the sun shines as he faces a long six-day ban after the Fortune Bowl meeting next Tuesday.

"She's a straightforward filly and never lets you down. I could feel Wimbledon coming up but once I gave her one smack, she just kept finding all the way to the line."

Kiwi Karma has now amassed stakes money edging close to the $690,000 mark for connections. - Singapore Turf Club
