Logan loves two-year-old’s style

Mongolian Falcon - Trish Dunell

Donna Logan rarely gets too serious with her juveniles, but Mongolian Falcon's performance at Matamata may tempt her to ask another question of the colt.

The Ruakaka trainer has a high opinion of the youngster and it was easy to see why after he strolled to victory in the Prima Park 2YO.

"We don't like to push them too hard as two-year-olds, but it would be great to get a bit of black type with his one," said Logan, who prepares Mongolian Falcon with Chris Gibbs.

The son of Fastnet Rock is raced by the Inner Mongolia Rider Horse Industry, who also purchased his brother for $450,000 during the Premier Sale at Karaka last week. He was sold by Curraghmore, also the vendor of the Trentham juvenile winner Heroic Valour.

Mongolian Falcon had finished third on debut at Ellerslie and he showed improvement at Matamata, although he is still far from the finished article.

"He doesn't know what he's doing yet and he needed a couple behind the saddle to keep his mind on the job," Logan said.

"It was his first big trip away, his first time left-handed and he's got his first win – fantastic!

"He's a very exciting character and we're looking forward to him as a three-year-old."

Mongolian Falcon travelled comfortably in front and a reminder from Leith Innes in the straight saw him easily repel the challenge of Gold Rush.

"He's a beautiful-looking horse," he said. "He got it pretty easy in front and it was a pretty easy win as well."

While Mongolian Falcon's task was made easier by the scratching at the barrier on veterinary advice of the unbeaten Sassy 'N' Smart, the colt's performance was still a sublime one. – NZ Racing Desk.
