David Ellis' confidence in the well-bred juvenile Heroic Valour has been rewarded on two fronts.

The Te Akau principal celebrated the two-year-old's debut victory in Saturday's New World Stokes Valley Maiden at Trentham and last week he also successfully secured his brother for $510,000 during the Premier Sale at Karaka.

Both Fastnet Rock colts were offered by Curraghmore, with Heroic Valour a $400,000 buy 12 months' ago.

"He's showed us a lot at home and he's a very progressive type," said Jamie Richards, who prepares the youngster at Matamata with Stephen Autridge.

"We've taken our time with him and put him aside after he won his first trial at Te Aroha. There's improvement to come from him - he's a lovely colt."

Those comments were echoed by stable jockey Matt Cameron who guided Heroic Valour, a half-brother to the Gr.1 Doncaster Handicap winner Triple Honour, to a comfortable defeat of fellow first-timer Rosa Carolina.

"He was a bit rank during the race and he's got a lot to learn, but he's got the goods," he said.

"It was only 1000 metres today and he got away with it."

Heroic Valour completed a winning Wellington double for Te Akau after Smashing's win in the Rating 85 sprint, but their fortunes were not so good at Matamata.

Unbeaten filly Sassy 'N' Smart was a late scratching on veterinary advice from the Prima Park 2YO after she threw herself backwards and ditched jockey Michael McNab prior to the start. – NZ Racing Desk.
