The high demand for the progeny of exciting Cambridge Stud stallion Tavistock continued unabated on the final day of the Select session of New Zealand Bloodstock's National Yearling Sale Series at Karaka on Friday.

Competition for youngsters by the son of Montjeu has been strong and that was evidenced again as a pair of colts vied for the day's top price early in the session. Lot 920, from Al Akbar mare Hula Bar, fell to the bid of the auction company acting as agent for $150,000 and briefly held the title until that was surpassed by Ohaupo vendor Hyde Park who received $160,000 for the colt from Jugah mare Jugadora. All told, the 29 yearlings by Tavistock sold in the Select Sale fetched an aggregate of $2,438,500.

The sale also represented a major success for Hyde Park's Gareth Hawthorn who was returning the colt to the Karaka sale ring after purchasing him from the National Weanling Sale last May for $18,000.

The colt went to the winning bid of Hong Kong agent Paul Chow under his Tartan Meadow Bloodstock banner. Chow has been active each day this week with three purchases during the Premier Sale and a further four to date during the Select session.

"I looked at this colt four times before he went through the ring and liked what I saw," he said.

"He's not really in the mould of the horses I normally buy but the Tavistock's are doing so well I think he is worth the risk. The price certainly wasn't exorbitant and we have a number of options with him.

"He will go back to the Cambridge property of Alex Oliveira and will do his early education there. We will see how he develops with the opportunity to race him here or to take him up to Hong Kong."

Chow intends staying on for the Sale's Festival session on Sunday which will complete the 2016 Sales Series after making his presence felt on the same day last year where he purchased the top lot of the day. Chow outlaid $85,000 for an Iffraaj colt from the Haunui Farm draft and is delighted with his progress to date.

"We purchased the sale topper at last year's Festival Sale and he has really impressed us with how he has developed," he said.

"I have a range of clients that I buy for with several of those with me here during the week so we will be back again on Sunday to see what we can find from that catalogue." – NZ Racing Desk
