Ohaupo based breeder Trevor Yule was still searching for words as he settled his strapping Tavistock colt back in his box at Karaka today after pulling off the coup of his breeding career just a few minutes earlier.
Yule guided the colt from Black Minnaloushe mare Anzac Green through the sale ring during the early stages of day two of the Select session at Karaka and was feeling a little stunned as a bidding duel for the colt was finally settled at the $155,000 mark. The resulting smile was hard to shake off his face as he recounted his family history at the annual yearling sale that commenced with his father back in the 1960's.
"My father Ernie first started selling horses at Trentham back in the early sixties and we have been at most sales ever since," he outlined.
"We have bred and raced some nice horses over the years including Jocasta who won the Matamata Breeders Stakes and ran 4th in a Railway Handicap while Porsha won a 1000 Guineas at Riccarton.
"We've had a few good sales in the past but nothing like this as I think $35,000 was the most we ever got for a yearling before."
Yule was quick to defer plenty of praise for the sale onto Cambridge Stud's Marcus Corban when asked how he came about selecting the Tavistock mating for Anzac Green.
"We only have the two mares and I had only planned to breed the other one, Java Silk that year," he explained.
"I was sitting with Marcus at Cambridge Stud one day and we settled on going to Power with Java Silk.
"He then asked me what I was doing with the other little brown mare and I told him I wasn't going to put her in foal. He asked me if I would be keen on visiting Tavistock if we could work out a deal and in the end I agreed."
That decision was repaid in spades as the well auctioned colt delivered a massive result.
Yule is now looking forward to putting his Power colt from Java Silk through the ring on Sunday as Lot 1310 on the last day of the sale. – NZ Racing Desk
