When Pukekohe trainer Nigel Tiley answered a call from an old friend last week he didn't know at the time it would result in him having to complete a pleasant assignment at Karaka this week.
Tiley achieved the first part of the task set for him when he went to $220,000 to secure Lot 550 on the first day of National Yearling Sales Series Select session, a colt from emerging stallion sensation Tavistock that was offered through the Henley Park draft.
"I got a call last week from an old mate I used to ride against when I did my stint up in Hong Kong," he explained.
"I thought he was just calling for a catch-up but he said he wanted me to buy some horses for him from the sale this week.
"I guess that's the sort of call every trainer wants to get."
Tiley had already done plenty of due diligence on the sale catalogue and was impressed by the Henley Park colt who is from Centaine mare Shartiz. Tiley's interest had been piqued by an extended pedigree that includes multiple Group One winner Dorabella along with a strong connection to one of Sir Peter Vela's Pencarrow Stud families through New Zealand Bloodstock Filly of the Year Insouciant and Group Three winner Copper Mountain.
"The mare has been given every chance having been to sires like High Chaparral, O'Reilly, Pentire and now Tavistock," he said.
"The Tavistock's are really firing and I loved the look of this colt as he is a lovely mover with a lot of scope to him.
"He's definitely going to take a little time but I can see him furnishing into a grouse three-year-old."
With one purchase under his belt Tiley is looking forward to completing the rest of his assignment over the next few days.
"The best part of the call was that he said buy me some horses, not just one," he grinned. – NZ Racing Desk
