The powerful Hawkes Racing team struck late on day two of the National Yearling Sale Series when they fought off the competition for Lot 424, a Fastnet Rock filly from the family of dual Japanese Horse of Year, Symboli Kris S.
After securing a pair of colts on the opening day of the sale, Wayne Hawkes nearly didn't make it to the ring as a return flight home to Sydney threatened to curtail his bidding activity.
A prolonged bidding duel saw him sign for the filly as he was being dragged to a waiting car readied to get him to Auckland Airport and his soon to depart Emirates Airline flight.
"We've had two good days with a couple of lovely colts yesterday and the filly we were desperate to get today," he said.
"I couldn't see past this filly as she was such a good looking type. We had seen her prior to the sale and once we got here we had to have her.
"It was a tough battle but it's always nice when you get the one you are desperate for."
Hawkes had outlaid $200,000 for a Reliable Man colt, Lot 34 from the Cambridge Stud draft early on Monday and followed up with a successful offer of $75,000 for Lot 75, an All Too Hard colt offered by Haunui Farm.
The Fastnet Rock filly was also consigned via Haunui who enjoyed a solid sale with 18 of 22 lots sold including a Reliable Man colt for $320,000 that was knocked down to local agent Bruce Perry on Monday. – NZ Racing Desk
