Japanese interests in early action at Karaka

A spur of the moment decision saw powerful Japanese breeding and racing operation Big Red Farm snare a bargain buy at Karaka on day two of the National Yearling Sale Series at Karaka.

Established in 1974, the Hokkaido based operation stands eight stallions including Hong Kong Cup winner Agnes Digital and produced Cosmo Bulk to win the Sgp Gr. 1 Singapore Airlines International Cup in 2006.

Family representative Hirokazu Okada is in attendance at Karaka this year, following in the footsteps of his father who had been a regular sales attendee from the early nineties.

"My father first started coming to New Zealand more than twenty years ago and I come back mainly every other year," he said.

"We arrived on Saturday morning and I've spent my time looking at the yearlings since then."

While Okada had inspected a number of individuals so far he admitted it was a last minute choice to bid on Lot 257, a colt by leading New Zealand sire Darci Brahma from Group Two winner Diamond Deck.

"I only saw him for the first time when he was walking around the outside parade ring," he admitted.

"He really caught my eye so I had a good look at him and decided to try for him.

"He is a lovely colt and I was lucky enough to secure him for a good price."

Okada advised the colt will be sent back to Japan to commence a racing career from one of the farm's three training locations. – NZ Racing Desk
