New Zealand Cup winner Jimmy Mac will move out of his comfort zone next month.
The Awapuni-trained stayer will race right-handed for the first time in the Gr.2 Go Racing Syndications Avondale Gold Cup and his performance in the 2400 metre event at Ellerslie will determine whether he returns in March.
"We'll make a decision after that as to whether we carry on for the Auckland Cup," trainer Gene Andrew said.
Jimmy Mac was the beaten favourite in last Saturday's Gr.2 Wellington Cup, but he came through the race without incident.
"I can't really put it down to anything in particular," Andrew said. "He ate up that night and he seems as good as gold. He still ran sixth and none of us were disappointed, he's never let us down."
