Wafer proved herself to be an inspired purchase when she earned a black type victory in her first outing for a new look team of owners.

The Alamosa three-year-old was a first-up winner at Kumara earlier this month and she added Saturday's Listed Gore Guineas to her record for Mike Breslin.

"Sixty percent of her was purchased last week by a syndicate that includes Bill Gleeson (of Wellfield Lodge)," said the Awapuni trainer, whose partner Tineke Balcombe bred the filly and has remained in the ownership.

"I expected her to win at Kumara, which she did, and she's just thrived on the trip. We've got black type now and it's increased her value quite a bit. We also bred the horse - we've only got the one broodmare."

Breslin trained Wafer's dam Salada, who won four races, for the late pedigree guru Clive Harper.

"Before he died he gave us a list of stallions and Alamosa was on it," he said.

Wafer will now return home with Breslin already eyeing a return trip to the South Island for another black type event.

"She might go to Christchurch later on for the Warstep Stakes," he said.

While Breslin was thrilled with Wafer's performance, he was rueing a lack of give in the ground at Trentham for Ringo, who finished seventh in the Gr.1 Harcourts Thorndon Mile.

"He just doesn't let down at all on really firm tracks," he said. – NZ Racing Desk.
