The perfect start Blackcrown has made to his racing career is all down to hard work.

The three-year-old was a comfortable debut winner at Tauherenikau earlier this month and the colt maintained his unbeaten record at Trentham on Saturday when he waltzed away with the Mitsubishi Electric Premier.

Awapuni horsewoman Lisa Latta said the Gerry Harvey-bred and owned Blackcrown had taken time and a rigorous training regime to hone his racing manners.

"I first got him about three months ago and we gave him a lot of jump-outs and trials and now he's switched on he's going ahead in leaps and bounds."

Blackcrown drew wide and showed good gate speed to come across the face of the field and sit outside the leader.

"I was in two minds whether to go back, but he jumped so well," rider Jonathan Riddell said.

Blackcrown was cruising on the turn and Riddell waited until halfway down the straight before asking the son of Swiss Ace to sprint and he quickly put the issue beyond any doubt.

"He's a beautiful animal," he said. "He got it easy across the top and he kicked really well so it's onwards and upwards for him."

Meanwhile, trainer Gary Hennessy starred in three roles when Temple Tiger narrowly won the Crombie Lockwood Bloodstock Insurance Premier under apprentice Shaun McKay.

"He's by our stallion and we bred him so it's really exciting," Hennessy said.

Hennessy also shares in the ownership of the son of Tiger Prawn, who stands at his Kingston Lodge property in Matamata. – NZ Racing Desk.
