News in brief

Nervous wait for Cameron

Leading jockey Matthew Cameron is facing nervous times.

An inquiry into his riding tactics aboard the favourite Mime at Ellerslie on Saturday has been adjourned for further investigation, including a review of betting activity on the race.

Mime suffered an interrupted run before finishing off well for second.

Cameron has upcoming bookings for the boom colt Xtravagant in Saturday's Gr.1 Levin Classic at Trentham, Listed Karaka Million favourite Manolo Blahniq and the unbeaten Hasselhoof on the Ellerslie undercard on January 24.

Wanganui step for Derby hope

Promising colt The Wolf will continue his build-up toward the Gr.1 BMW New Zealand Derby at Wanganui this week.

A last-start sixth in the Gr.3 Wellington Stakes, the Johno Benner and Holly Wynyard-trained three-year-old will take on the older horses on Thursday.

"He was luckless at Trentham after being caught four and five wide all the way," Benner said. "We'll take an easy option with him in a Rating 65 mile as we progress toward the Derby."

By Rip Van Winkle, The Wolf's half-brother (Lot 716) by Nadeem will be offered by Little Avondale during the Select Sale at Karaka later this month.

Queensland target for NZ-bred filly

Kiwi-bred mare Jacqui's Joy has been set for the Queensland winter carnival.

The trip to Brisbane beckons after she completed a winning hat-trick last time out at Caulfield, her third success from seven career appearances.

The Mitchell Beer and Max Hinton-trained filly will now be given a break off the back of Saturday's victory.

"Whether we decide to give her one or two runs here and go to Brisbane, or take her straight up there, is yet to be decided," Beer said.
