Despite registering a convincing victory in the last race on a star studded day at Ellerslie, trainer Tony Pike believes promising mare Nomisma is still twelve months away from fulfilling her true potential.
The four-year-old Thorn Park mare claimed the third win of her burgeoning career when she stormed to victory in the rating 75 Otakiri Reserve 1600 and cap off a top day for Pike's Cambridge stable. Earlier they had claimed the Gr. 2 Great Northern Guineas with Rangipo and went agonisingly close to a Group One triumph when Allez Eagle was beaten by a neck in the Sistema Railway Stakes.
"When the rain came I thought this mare was our best chance on the day as she really appreciates some cut in the track and her work leading in had been enormous," admitted Pike.
"We've been patient with her as she is probably still twelve months away from her peak but she has shown us the ability required to step up to stakes company in the future."
Pike will wait to see what rating penalty the mare attracts for this win before confirming her future plans.
"There really isn't a lot around for her so that's why we have just picked our way through the grades to date," he said.
"She will most likely have one more run in her rating and then we might freshen her up for a look at something during Auckland Cup Week.
"She has won comfortably over a mile and I do think she will get up to 2000 metres at least so at this time next year we could see her competing at the highest level."
The win by Nomisma should also boost interest in a younger half sister by freshman sire Ocean Park who will be offered through the Mapperley Stud draft as Lot 264 during the Premier session of the New Zealand Bloodstock Yearling Sales Series that gets underway at Karaka on the 25th of January.– NZ Racing Desk
