Arbitrage back for Derby quest
Phase one of Arbitrage's development has gone according to plan and the colt is now home to complete his Group One mission.
He has returned to the Matamata stable of Michael Moroney and Chad Ormsby to prepare for the BMW Derby, with his domestic preparation to open at Ellerslie in Sunday's Listed BMW 3YO Salver.
"He was bought at Karaka and Chad broke him in and took him up to the trialling stage before he went over to Mike in Melbourne," Ballymore Stables' racing manager Nick Fairweather said.
"He arrived here about 10 days ago and he's a lovely, athletic type. He'll be going into Sunday's race a primed and fit horse."
A son of Rip Van Winkle and My First Fifteen, whose Nadeem filly (Lot 1367) will be offered by Lime Country Thoroughbreds at Karaka in 2016, Arbitrage has shaped promisingly in his four Victorian starts out of Moroney's Flemington stable.
"He won at Kilmore two runs back and was then third there with both runs over 1900 metres," Fairweather said.
"Mike has been racing him forward in his races and we will probably adopt similar tactics on Sunday.
"He has got a very high cruising speed and he's got a kick, but in saying that he is tactical enough to take a sit if need be.
"He's a really nice horse and after the weekend Mike and Chad will work out the path to the Derby for him."
Arbitrage is owned by Aucklanders Mark Wyborn and Robin Peel-Walker and they also race Tavistock's son Margin Trader, who followed a similar programme for the stable 12 months ago.
A Bendigo maiden winner, he made his next four appearances in New Zealand before finishing seventh in the Derby behind Mongolian Khan and he has subsequently returned to Australia. – NZ Racing Desk.
