A brave front-running performance got Hiyaam (NZ) (High Chaparral) the win in Saturday’s Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) in Sydney.

The run was reminiscent of the display that saw her win the Gr.1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) last year.

The Mick Price-trained four-year-old mare was second-up this campaign coming off the back of an unplaced run in the Gr.2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) in February.

Ridden by Tim Clark, Hiyaam went straight to the front as she left the barriers and had a healthy lead on her rivals heading into the straight.

Despite some strong challenges from runner up Shraaoh (Sea The Stars) and the third placegetter Emperor’s Way (Roman Emperor) Hiyaam dug deep to grab victory on the line winning by 0.2L.

Raced by breeder Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, Hiyaam was raised at Brighthill Farm and is out of the Zabeel mare Mazarine (NZ), who is from the legendary Eight Carat family. -NZ Racing Desk
