Local apprentice rider Corey Campbell was the star of the show at Wingatui on Tuesday where he bagged four winners and a pair of minor placings from his nine rides on the day.
Based out of the Brian and Shane Anderton stable, Campbell made good use of his two-kilogram claim to boot home three winners for his mentors while also saluting on the Robert Dennis-trained Nightcap earlier in the day.
Campbell produced a peach of a ride to take out the day’s main event, the Speights Open 1400, on the Anderton trained Gallant Boy.
The eight-year-old, who was registering his ninth career victory, is the older brother of the Chris Waller-trained Patrick Erin who missed a start in the Gr.1 Lexus Melbourne Cup (3200m) after being withdrawn from contention on the weekend due to issues with an elevated temperature.
The seventeen-year-old Campbell, who is in the second full-year of his apprenticeship, has made a flying start to the season with his tally of 18 wins currently placing him in the top ten on the National Jockey’s premiership ladder.
