Dato' Tan Chin Nam dies aged 93

Dato’ Tan Chin Nam, the Malaysian-born entrepreneur, developer and racing investor, has died aged 93.

Well known for racing horses with legendary trainer Bart Cummings, Tan Chin Nam had enormous success in winning some of Australia’s greatest races.

He raced horses with Cummings for close to 40 years, winning many of Australia’s feature races including the Melbourne Cup on four occasions, the Cox Plate three times, the Caulfield Cup, Doncaster Mile and more, with his horses carrying the black and white checks, yellow sleeves, black and white check cap colours.

Some of the best horses he raced included Saintly, So You Think, Viewed, Catalan Opening, Faint Perfume and dual Melbourne Cup winner Think Big.

Tan Chin Nam also owned Think Big Stud, located along the Wingecarribee River at Burradoo in NSW.

The Moonee Valley Racing Club stages the Gr.2 Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes in September as a major lead up race for the Cox Plate in his honour. -racing.com
