Matamata trainer Peter McKay has taken a patient approach with a pair of progressive three-year-olds.
Langkawi, an impressive 1400m winner at Hastings last Saturday will be kept for targets in the summer and autumn, while multiple stakes performer Cavallo Veloce will also be patiently handled.
“Langkawi has gone out to the paddock for a couple of weeks and he will start back in mid-November,” McKay said.
“Towards the end of November there is a Group race at either Otaki or Ellerslie and then on to some of the staying races a bit later on.
Cavallo Veloce finished eighth in last Saturday’s Gr.2 Sacred Falls Hawke's Bay Guineas (1400m) after racing prominently throughout, and McKay will now look to bypass the Gr.1 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m).
“I was still toying with the idea of giving him one more run to go down to Christchurch, but we just decided this morning we will wait and target the races coming into Christmas and go from there.”
“We rode him upside down last time. We pushed him forward a little bit and it was a fast run race.”
