The Michael and Matthew Pitman-trained Savvy Coup was crowned New Zealand’s Champion Three-Year-Old at Sunday’s Horse of the Year Awards, and the daughter of Savabeel is pleasing her trainers ahead of her resumption in Saturday’s Gr.1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m).
“She’s working really well and she should be competitive, but I think the bookies have got it pretty right,” Michael Pitman said of the $31 chance.
“She is at good odds this week, she shortens in for the mile (Gr.1 Windsor Park Plate) and she’s favourite for the 2000m (Gr.1 Livamol Classic).
“That’s the path that we’re taking and with the Livamol, I really believe that if we can get her right, it’s a race that she will be capable of winning.”
Savvy Coup has prepared for her first-up Group One assignment by working with race rival and stablemate Son Of Maher.
“We’re not trial trainers. I hardly ever go to the trials.
“I am really relying on the work that Son Of Maher and Savvy Coup do together to get each other ready. Both horses are going really well.”
Chris Johnson will ride Savvy Coup, while Sam Weatherly, who is back from Sydney for a week, will partner Group Two winner Son Of Maher.
