Apprentice Ryan Elliot achieved a career first at Te Rapa on Saturday.
The 19-year-old’s persistence paid off when he rode his first winner for Ardmore trainer Stephen McKee when they successfully combined with Royal Ruler.
“He’s always texting me so it was good to put him on,” McKee said.
Part-owned by his father Trevor, Royal Ruler is by Sun Ruler who is by Zabeel out of the champion mare Sunline.
