Boys Get Paid, a racing Facebook group with 9800 members, is auctioning the saddlecloth carried by Who Shot Thebarman when he won the Gr.1 Sydney Cup (3200m) at Randwick.
The saddlecloth will be auctioned by gavelhouse.com, closing on July 23, with proceeds to be donated equally between Riding for the Disabled and Men’s Health Trust.
“We wanted to do something for charity this year if we could, and one of the boys in Australia bought the saddlecloth and wants to auction it off,” said BGP administrator Luke Kemeys.
“With the help of Peter Rubery at Race Images it has been framed, with a photo from Bradley Photography of Who Shot Thebarman winning the race, a fist pumping Blake Shinn in the saddle, and signatures from Blake Shinn and trainer Chris Waller. There is also a certificate of authenticity.
“We chose the two charities and it coincides with Men’s Health Month in June. Most of the group are boys, and Men’s Health is trying to get their message in front of 20 to 30-year-old lads, which BGP have a huge amount of, and we’re happy to collaborate with them.
“Gavelhouse saw what we were doing and said they would run the auction on their website, push it out there, and we think it’s a pertinent thing to do for the racing industry,” Kemeys said.
Bids for the saddlecloth can be registered on gavelhouse.com from Tuesday, July 17 until the live auction on Monday July 23.
